Human smugglers detained in China
WebPosted Mon Jul 24 15:31:28 2000

BEIJING - Two buses have been detained in what Chinese police say was an attempt to smuggle 82 people out of China by sea.

Acting on a tip, police in Liaoning province made the arrests Wednesday as the buses were on the way to the port city of Dalian, Chinese state media reported.

The final destination of the passengers is not known.

This was the largest operation of its kind discovered in the province. Most human smuggling originates in the province of Fujian.

That's where a group of 58 immigrants found dead in a truck at the British port of Dover in June, started their journey.

After that tragedy, China says it has stepped up international co-operation. Police recently concluded a three-month campaign against human trafficking in Fujian, which resulted in the arrests of 109 suspects.
