Faced with deportation, Chinese migrants riot

Wednesday, July 5, 2000

Victoria -- Chinese migrants rioted yesterday as Canada Immigration prepared to deport 120 of the nearly 600 migrants found crammed aboard four rusty boats last summer.

The riots began Monday night at about 10 p.m., lasting for one hour, and continued again yesterday at 8 a.m., said Sheldon Green, a spokesman for B.C. Corrections. He said a group of about 12 ringleaders smashed windows yesterday morning and broke beds, brandishing bed parts as weapons, and using beds to blockade the entrance to their dormitory. Kim Lunman
